Watercolor Lessons

Let me begin by saying that this instructional book is one of the very best on the subject of watercolor painting. While I am certainly not an expert on the subject, I have scoured the library, the internet and even bookstores (when I can locate a good one) for how-to books in general and especially watercolor painting for years. Why even bother with an artistic subject that seems so basic? It’s good to learn a few things before diving into a new type of art I always tell myself. A lot has been written about it, but most of the books I’ve come across get very deep into the subject with fabulous paintings to copy which are fun to look at but ultimately end up being very overwhelming. This causes me to put each book down without finishing it.
Remarkably Emma Lefebvre seems to have kept my attention for this entire book. She is thorough (always with her nice watercolor illustrations sprinkled throughout) with her information but not too deep. Just the basics plus a few extras. When I’m just starting out with a new creative subject to learn about I want the basics mostly because I’m always anxious to get started. With this book, though, I read nearly all of it before wanting to pick up a paintbrush. I am not entirely patient it turns out. After completing this book I really felt more confident with watercolor and felt ready to start practicing more. I was also encouraged to pick up those other more intense unfinished watercolor how-to books I’d set back on the shelves. I might add, too, that I have become a fan of Emma Lefebvre on YouTube. She does great tutorials.
This book is a great start and I would encourage anyone who is curious to pick it up and peruse through the pages or come see the other books we have on this and many other creative subjects in our non-fiction section. Oh, and FYI for over 2 1/2 years we have been enjoying the adult watercolor workshop on Mondays @ 2:00 p.m. Just in case you’d like to paint with other people who are great at sharing their own tips and techniques and are a fun bunch of people. No need to call ahead or bring anything. We supply everything and can get you started.
