The New Knitting Stitch Dictionary
Let me begin by saying that I am still in the beginner category when it comes to knitting, but I am always in search of books to improve my skills. This book seems to have it all from basic casting on and knit and purl stitch diagrams to very complicated cable, aran and even lace knitting stitches. The stitch guides/patterns are photographed beautifully and the instructions are simply charted and easy to follow. The patterns are also organized according to category as in Knit-Purl patterns, Aran patterns, Slip-stitch patterns, etc. and each is color coded and easily seen along the edge of the book.
Towards the back of the book there are illustrations from basic casting on to the most complex stitches, all in the Knitting Basics chapter. As if all of this wonderfully presented knitting information wasn’t enough, there are even more pattern planning instructions very nicely illustrated and several more charts; even a chart on how to knit the alphabet.
I still have so much to learn, but checking out books like this is very helpful. I do enjoy a good non-fiction how-to book that is so well planned and produced. We have more books on knitting along with other handcraft books at BPL, but this is one of the best in depth knitting guidebooks I have ever seen. Knitters of all skill levels will find something to improve their skills in this one. Oh, and if you are interested in learning more in person, we have a fiber arts group that meets Mondays at 10:00 a.m. here at BPL.
